Samford Road safety improvements

Construction is underway for a project to improve safety along a 1.5-km section of Samford Road, between Lomandra Access Road picnic area and Camp Mountain Road, and at the Camp Mountain Road intersection.

The project will reduce the rate and severity of crashes along this section of Samford Road. Community consultation has helped to determine the key features of this safety project.

Key features

Road resurfacing for a safer, smoother surface.
Installing additional guardrail for greater protection from roadside hazards where required.
Shoulder widening and wide centre line treatment to separate through traffic and reduce the potential for head-on and loss-of-control crashes. This will require vegetation clearing.
Road surface drainage improvements.
Raised median and traffic islands at Camp Mountain Road intersection to separate through traffic and reduce the potential for head-on and loss-of-control crashes.
New lighting, pavement rehabilitation and signage at Camp Mountain Road intersection.
Green infrastructure to improve fauna safety.

This project is fully funded by the Queensland Government. Investment IDs 1146288, 1490751

An additional $5.86 million in funding has been secured for this project, to ensure these safety improvement upgrades are delivered for the community.

Current status

Construction is underway and expected to be complete by early-2025, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The department will provide more information to the community as the project progresses.

Additional information

Samford Road was identified for safety improvements due to its history of head-on and run-off road crashes with a high proportion of serious injuries.

The project's preliminary design was released to the community for feedback in early 2021. The majority of submissions received did not support the proposed removal of the 750-metre westbound overtaking lane, a key design feature for this safety improvement project.

This project is funded by the Queensland Government's Targeted Road Safety Program, which aims to improve road safety by implementing high-benefit, cost-effective treatments to address known and potential crash locations.

As part of the Queensland Government's commitment to support the City of Moreton Bay's Council's Green Infrastructure Network Delivery Program, the department will also deliver fauna protection measures on Samford Road as part of this project.
