We at Transport and Main Roads are focused on delivering the best Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games possible by drawing on previous involvements to ensure our customers receive a positive Games experience.
Planning and delivering the transport operations for the Games is our responsibility, in partnership with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) and the City of Gold Coast.
Our customers are at the heart of everything we do. There is a wealth of skills and experience within the department, and we will draw on these skills, expertise and local knowledge to deliver a safe, secure and reliable transport network for the Games.
We have played a major role in successfully coordinating transport for some of the biggest events Queensland has hosted, including welcoming the leaders of the world for the G20 Summit and motor vehicle enthusiasts for the Gold Coast 600 (GC600).
Each year, we assist the GC600 to ensure transport on the Gold Coast keeps moving. This year we had the opportunity to test operational planning for the Games and observe any issues.
Together with the City of Gold Coast we promoted travel demand management messages to change the way our customers travelled in the lead up and during the event. As a result, local traffic was reduced at impacted areas with clear messages communicated.
We will establish a Transport Coordination Centre with our key partner agencies, shifting our business from traffic management to multi-modal transport coordination. It will ensure transport services effectively support the Games and customers have real-time access to transport information.
Having transport services coordinated from one location means we can provide the best service for everyone coming to this transformational event, and for all Queenslanders into the future.
I am confident TMR will succeed in delivering an efficient integrated transport network that will keep the city moving.
The work we are doing for the Commonwealth Games is underpinned by TMR’s Strategic Plan and our vision to deliver a transport network of the future for Queensland: A network that is accessible to everyone, responsive to our customer’s needs and innovative in its use of emerging technologies. A single network that promotes prosperity in our cities and regions.
